BREAST REDUCTION
What are the benefits?
Bilateral breast reduction can significantly alleviate back and shoulder pain, and can also aid in maintaining good body posture. In addition, the procedure may make it easier to find clothes that fit properly and to undertake physical activities.
Is it for me?
Breast reduction can improve your appearance and self confidence, however, it won’t necessarily change your relationship with others nor their perception of you. Before opting for this type of procedure, be clear about your expectations and discuss them with Dr. Duclos. She’ll be happy to answer any questions clearly and provide information on the type of procedure that’s best for you, including the pros and cons.
One more thing: if you’re thinking about losing a significant amount of weight, it’s probably a good idea to wait until you do so before considering surgery.
What techniques are used?
During the procedure, the surgeon removes excess glandular tissue and lifts the breast, relieving muscular stress on the neck, back and shoulders. Dr. Duclos may also recommend liposuction on either side of the thorax.
What should I expect?
During your consultation, Dr. Duclos will examine your breasts, evaluate your health and discuss your expectations. She will also ask you about your family history regarding breast conditions. If you have had a mammogram, bring the results with you.
Next, Dr. Duclos will discuss the surgical technique most appropriate for your body shape, height and size. She will show you the site of the incisions, determine with you the exact size you want your breasts to ultimately be and, if necessary, suggest liposuction on the sides of the breasts. Dr. Duclos will also explain the inherent risks of the procedure, as well as each step of the procedure itself, which is usually performed under general anaesthetic, and discuss pre and post operative care.
Before the procedure, you will have to purchase a bra that is appropriate for the day of the operation.
Afterwards, you will then remain under observation until the doctor decides you may leave the clinic. Painkillers will be prescribed and the date of your next appointment will be given to you before you leave. Make sure you ask someone to accompany you back home.
After the procedure you may experience some light to moderate pain that should be relieved by the prescribed medication.
For the first month following your procedure, you must keep your bra on at all times, except when taking a shower (Dr. Duclos will let you know when you can start showering). You must also avoid any exaggerated arm movements to keep your stitches in place. In general, you should be able to resume any sports one month after the procedure. But remember to avoid exposing your scars to sunlight or in any kind of tanning salon for 6 months.
What are the risks?
Even though they are infrequent and generally minor, some complications can occur with this type of procedure, such as bleeding, haematoma, infection, problems with scarring, stitches opening, and asymmetry.
In extremely rare cases, necrosis (due to poor blood flow) can occur and may cause deformation of the nipple and areola. Loss of sensation can also occur. It is usually temporary but can, in rare cases, become permanent.
In general, this procedure has no effect on your ability to breastfeed.
